What are resistant grape varieties?

Resistant grape varieties are the talk of the town. They are becoming increasingly common in vineyards, are the subject of discussion at trade shows, and are even starting to appear on the menus of certain restaurants. But what exactly are they?

What are resistant grape varieties?

A resistant grape variety is a variety of vine selected for its natural resistance to certain diseases, including:

  • the mildiou

  • the oïdium

These diseases are the ones that traditionally force winegrowers to treat their plots very regularly, even in organic farming (where the authorized inputs remain heavy and repetitive).

With resistant grape varieties, the idea is simple:
– the vine defends itself,
– much less treatment is required,
– and we can work closer to nature.

Why do these grape varieties exist?

Resistant grape varieties are a response to the major challenges currently facing viticulture.

Reduce treatments

For many winegrowers, the goal is clear: to no longer depend on plant protection products, even those authorized for organic farming.
These new varieties greatly reduce the number of mandatory treatments.

Better withstand climatic hazards

Wet springs, sudden rains, irregular summers…
Resistant grape varieties are much less sensitive, which stabilizes production.

Adapting to climate change

They are among the most promising avenues for more resilient, sober, and sustainable viticulture.

What resistant grape varieties exist today?

There are already many resistant grape varieties in Europe. Among the most widely used, and those we work with, are:

  • Floréal

  • Artaban

  • Vidoc

  • Souvignier Gris

The advantages of resistant grape varieties

Far fewer treatments

The number of interventions is falling:
Less copper, less sulfur, fewer tractor passes!

Reduced production costs

Fewer interventions =
→ less time
→ less fuel
→ less equipment
→ less labor
This is a significant advantage, especially for small organizations.

A gesture for biodiversity

Reducing treatments means preserving: soil, microfauna, insects, microbial life.

These varieties enable us to work according to a philosophy that respects life, without compromising on technical standards.

What does the future hold for resistant grape varieties?

Viticulture is evolving rapidly.
These grape varieties offer a promising path forward, not to replace traditional varieties, but to open up a more ecological, sustainable, and resilient alternative.

They offer winegrowers a way to produce differently, with fewer inputs and greater environmental consistency.
